Run-off water from shooting ranges can contain concentrations of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and antimony (Sb) that can pose a risk to aquatic organisms. It is mainly the bioavailable fraction of the metals that pose a risk. The environmental quality standard (EQS) for annual average of Pb was in 2015 revised to apply to the bioavailable concentration of the metal. In this study, bioavailability of Cu, Zn, Sb and Pb in run-off water from the shooting ranges Avgrunnsdalen, Hengsvann, Terningmoen and Steinsjøen has been investigated with various measurement techniques and biotic ligand models. Speciation of the metals was determined by size and charge fractioning. Two passive samplers were used, Sorbicell and DGT, which measure different fractions of the metals. The models PNEC-pro, Bio-met, Windward BLM, Lead EQS Screening Tool and Lead BLM Tool were used to calculate site-specific EQSs for Cu, Zn and Pb. Bio-met and Lead EQS Screening Tool were also used to estimate the bioavailable concentration of the metals in the waters. The size distribution showed that Pb was largely associated with other substances in the waters, followed by Cu, Zn and Sb. The charge distribution showed that Zn primarily existed as cations, followed by Pb and Cu, while Sb existed as anions. The waters with the lowest concentration of organic matter had the largest proportion of cationic Cu and Pb, and Zn <10 kDa. SorbiCell adsorbed all forms of Cu in the waters, but only charged forms of Zn and Pb. SorbiCell showed a tendency to measure too low concentration of Sb, and too low concentration of Cu and Zn in certain waters, compared to the metal concentrations measured in the samples. The diffusion of Cu, Zn and Pb in DGT did not show stable results for test periods <2 days. For DGT that was deployed for 1 week, there was a good correlation between the concentration of Cu measured by DGT and Cu <3 kDa and between Pb measured by DGT and Pb <10 kDa. The concentration of Zn measured by DGT was higher than the concentration of Zn measured in the samples. There were large differences between the site-specific EQSs calculated by the different models. The site-specific EQSs were generally higher than the general EQSs set by the authorities. The bioavailable concentrations of the metals calculated with Bio-met and Lead EQS Screening Tool were lower than the concentrations measured by the different measurement techniques (except Pb <3 kDa). For Cu and Pb, cationic compounds, compounds taken up by DGT or compounds <10 kDa can correspond to the concentration of bioavailable metal. For Cu, the fraction <3 kDa may also be a suitable estimate of the bioavailable metal. Based on this, between 22 and 69 % of Cu and between 21 and 70 % of Pb in the waters were bioavailable. For Zn and Sb, there was less variation between the concentrations measurement by the different methods. Zinc predominantly existed as cations (>90 %) and compounds <10 kDa (70-81 %). Antimony predominantly existed as anions (81-95 %) and compounds <3 kDa (81-90 %), which probably corresponds to Sb(OH)6 -. Based on this study, FFI recommends charge fractioning to be used to determine the bioavailable concentration of Cu, Zn and Pb in run-off water from shooting ranges. Both charge and size fractioning are recommended as methods to determine the concentration of Sb(OH)6 - in run-off water.
