Abstract
This report is an initial study of the possible adverse effect wind farms could have on radar systems. First it gives some general theory on radar, and compare normal radar targets with the large reflections from the structures of a wind farm. A number of possible adverse effects on radar are identified, and initiation of targets in wrong position and adverse effects of jamming are discussed in more detail. Possible mitigation issues are briefly discussed. Adverse effects to specific radars are not discussed due to security classification. One chapter contains an extract of studies and experience from other countries. Some additional work that should be performed is identified. Possible costs of modifications to the radar are mentioned. Based on technical findings and practice in other countries the report gives preliminary guidelines on how to handle wind energy applications near military radar systems.
